Additional Details

The Spanish abolition law of May 1880 provided for an eight-year period of mandatory indentured servitude, in effect postponing the end of slavery. This law was superseded by a full emancipation in 1886. In this letter, the 1880 act is quoted at length regarding the responsibilities of the former owners: "They will pay to the sponsors the wages that as free men will correspond to them from the day in which they complete emancipation, as well as the employer being sponsored under the protection of the fiscal promoter of the court inspector, to secure the integrity of all the rights that have been declared." It then sets forth the penalties to the owners for failure to comply. An English translation is available.
