(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION--DOUGLASS, FREDERICK.) Heroes of the Colored Race. Chromolithograph, 21x30 inches, with three large center portraits of Frederick Douglass, Hiram Revels and Blanche K Bruce; above and around them are numerous historical vignettes and smaller portraits. Professionally conserved with some repairs to the upper left and margins. A superior example. Copyrighted by J. Hoover and printed by George M Rewell Company, Cleveland, Ohio, 1881
rare, only the second copy we have seen. A fine example of this chromolithograph celebrating three of the nineteenth century's most important African-American statesmen. The background vignettes contrast scenes from slavery days on the plantation, with scenes in the schoolroom and on the battlefield. A copy of this lithograph can be seen on the Library of Congress's African American Odyssey exhibit website.
