a rare, early letter from douglass's close friend charles lenox remond discussing Frederick Douglass's proposed appearance at New Bedford's Liberty Hall. "Dear Friend John Bailey; The Liberator of this week will inform you with other friends in New Bedford of the intention of Frederick and myself to spend the next Sabbath in your town . . . and you will feel at liberty to make arrangements for such meetings in Liberty Hall as in your judgement shall seem desirable and advantageous. . . . Frederick will have his Narrative along for sale. And, if you think he would be likely to dispose of them freely at a meeting on Saturday evening after our arrival, then make an appointment for Saturday evening when you please. But take your own judgement in the matter inasmuch as I have no other choice than as above expressed and presume Frederick will have." Douglass must have had with him some of the earliest copies of his Narrative because it was officially released on May 28th. By midsummer it was clear that Douglass's Narrative had alerted his master, Hugh Auld to his whereabouts. In August, Douglass left for an extended visit to Great Britain and Ireland. The recipient of this letter, John Bailey (1787-1883) was a noted clockmaker and devout Quaker.
