A view of the French settlement of Charles Fort, founded in 1562 on what is now Parris Island, South Carolina. Named Carolina after King Charles, the fort was taken by the Spanish in 1565 and retaken and destroyed by the French in 1568. The image shows what seem to be both native and African slave laborers. From Ogilvy's seminal atlas "America: Being the Latest, and Most Accurate Description of the New World," London in 1671.
