(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION--MOUNT VERNON.) WASHINGTON, JOHN AUGUSTINE. Letter from Cousin B. W. Herbert at Clay Mont to Cousin John Augustine Washington, concerning his health and West Ford's management of money over the past two years. Single folio leaf, folded to form four pages, written on two sides with integral address on reverse July 8, 1843

Additional Details

A fascinating letter in which Washington's cousin appears to be concerned about finances and the book-keeping as recorded and kept by West Ford. 'What I now want you to do is this: M.H.(?) says West Ford has only paid (in the last two years) fifty dollars to him. Will you get West to give you a statement for accounts and receipts from him, what money he owes, receipts for me, which this shall be your authority and power of attorney from me to act in the matter. By so doing you will greatly oblige me. He goes to say that he has had chills, but a respite from them for one day. The Washingtons seem to be plagued by ill health from drafty old and cold homes.
