a letter sent to john augustine washington attempting to extort money from him. Washington wrote a small note at the foot of the second page "R. S. T & Co-abortive attempt to take me in." The author of this letter had written to Washington previously and now makes a second try to get some money from him: "If you had takeing my advise your negro Joe would have been with you yet, but I suppose you thought me an imposter and paid no attention to my letter. I told you to watch Joe. . . . Now listen to me for I mean what I say and as I told you the truth before, I'll tell it yet. If you will send me cash $35, I will at once fix a trap to git you boy, and will git him in less than ten days for you in Virginia, at a little town within 12 miles of Pennsylvania, where you must have a party of men and take him. I will get you on his trac and you can get him certain, and catch 2 white men who are to meet them. I am telling the truth."
