Additional Details

an acceptable copy of an early edition of once common narrative, made tremendously scarce by the oscar-winning film version of the story. Solomon Northup's story was sadly a common one in the years preceding the Civil War. Many free blacks were kidnapped and sold into slavery. Once back in the South, it would be nearly impossible to prove one's free status.
