first edition of an important slave narrative. The story of the kidnapping of Vina Still like that of Solomon Northup was all too common. Free blacks had to be very careful where they walked because slavers were constantly kidnapping free blacks and taking them to the large slave markets in Washington and Richmond where they would disappear into slavery on some plantation where their voice could not be heard. This particular narrative is well laid out with a précis of events described for each chapter.
