Additional Details

Fannie Virginia Casseopia Lawrence was one of a number of light-skinned children, 'redeemed' from the South by reformers who distributed carte-de-visites like this one at Sanitary Fairs etc, to raise money for the Freedmen's Bureau and other groups aiding the newly freed. No one knows what Fannie's real name might have been; but Catherine Lawrence had her baptized in Brooklyn at Plymouth Church by Henry Ward Beecher.
