Additional Details

Following reconstruction, the Southern Democrats were able to regain much of their former power. In 1888 the Republican Party of South Carolina had suffered yet another defeat. African-American politician Ellery M. Brayton accuses the Democratic Party of gross violations of the rights of black voters. Among other things the Democrats were not only requiring a poll tax, but made it a criminal offense to not pay it. Scarce. OCLC locates only 5 copies.
