Additional Details

John Wesley Cromwell (1846-1927), lawyer, historian, member of the Board of Audit of the Emigrant Aid Society, and later co-founder of the American Negro Academy (1897) was a tireless civil rights advocate. His long remark in this flyer is worth citing: 'There is (sic) no laws of any country so elastic as here in America when they have to do with questions of Negro Rights and Justice, in both state and national courts. They have been and is (sic) being stretched as far as necessary to reach the object aimed at - (?) to defeat the ends of Justice to the interest of a Negro who is in quest of the protection of the law.' The Emigrant Aid Society was established to aid Negroes pouring out of the South to the Mid-west and North East. no copies located by oclc
