VIRTUAL SLAVERY FOR A FREEDMAN (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION--RECONSTRUCTION.) Freedman's Contract. China Grove Plantation: Mississippi, 1866

Additional Details

A printed Freedmen''s Bureau contract with virtually all of the protections crossed out. A clear example of the reprehensible manner in which plantation owners took advantage of ex-slaves who found themselves "free" but with nothing to eat and no place to go. For example: the paragraphs regarding the number of hours that one could work in a day have been crossed out; as are the stipulations on the kind of work the freedman could be asked to do. On the reverse, the ex-slave is docked for sick time and so on. Ironically, the China Grove Plantation was purchased in 1869 by August Mazique, one of the owner''s ex-slaves. Today, China Grove Plantation is a tourist attraction.
