the remarkable narrative of a union officer who came to mississippi after the war with the best of intentions to 'make a difference' and make his fortune. Gathering a number of colored veterans who were still hoping for the promised 'Forty Acres,' he leased a cotton plantation together with his brother Charles. Their business was not successful, but Albert Morgan stuck it out, eventually entering politics and becoming sheriff. He married a black woman, after helping to change the law that forbade it. His narrative is especially rich in detail, discussing his rather difficult relations with local whites who had fought for the Confederacy and whose attitudes regarding racial harmony were diametrically opposed to his. Sadly, he and his family eventually fled after their lives were threatened.
