Hoff states in his preface: "The following pages have been prepared with a special view to the instruction of a very numerous class of persons in our southern states . . ." By 1852, the colored populations of several of the Deep Southern states almost exceeded that of the white population. The first part of the manual is basically an adaptation of Dr. Watts''s catechism for children, with two more chapters of catechism, a chapter of prayers and some selections from scripture. It should be noted that Hoff acknowledges Charles C. Jones of South Carolina''s similar work, adding that he hoped his would improve upon it.
