first edition, signed by the author on the photographic frontispiece. Bruner was born a slave in Clark County, Kentucky in 1845. "Having fought in the Union Army during the Civil War, after a harsh life as a slave, Bruner migrated to Ohio where he was a laborer for a time and then a janitor at Miami University." Scarce. Brignano #38, mistakenly giving the date of publication as 1925. Bruner's narrative was printed in 1918.
