Augustus Jenkins was writes: "If necessary have him secured in Lexington jail and write me as soon as possible after getting the first information. . ." He adds: "I will deposit in the hands of Mr. Stephens, tavern keeper in Lexington fifteen dollars for any person that will put Charles the negro man that I bought of A. Hunter in Lexington jail. The fellow has a scar on his upper lip." Lexington is approximately 325 miles from Newport Tennessee, so Charles must have had a good head start.
