Napier asks a lawyer to intercede on behalf of a Black British seaman who was involved in an altercation with a Southern white stevedore in American service. Napier wants to make certain that the case is transferred from the Supreme Court of Alabama to the district federal court in Mobile where he feels the seaman will receive a fairer hearing. Napier contends that the white seaman, who had gotten the worst of the fight, had "converted maliciously this accidental collision into a criminal charge, got out a warrant and procured the committal of his antagonit who may not, it is apprehended, obtain a fair trial owing to the popular passions which have been aroused, and the prevailing prejudice of colour."
