Additional Details

Deposition taken from Thomas Cook, a seaman on the sloop Fanny, under Master Nathaniel Ingraham. The sloop was taken by British privateers and turned over to American authorities. The deposition was taken in a suit brought for damages. Master Ingraham took the ship to Africa and picked up 73 slaves for transport to the West Indies. This was apparently done without the knowledge of the plaintiff who had contracted for the shipment of ordinary cargo. The case then does not address the illegality of slave trading, but rather a breach of contract.
