Accomplished Printed Document Signed by the Principal Chief of the Choctaw Nation and the Governor of the Chickasaw Nation, granting a parcel of land to Phoebe Hughes, a former slave. One page, small folio, some staining and some separation along several folds; with two affixed paper seals; docketed on verso. Indian Territory, 21 December 1904

Additional Details



The Five Civilized Tribes, which included the Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations, owned slaves before Emancipation. An act of Congress directed the Nations to grant each of their freed slaves a parcel equal to 40 acres. This deed grants land to a former slave named Phoebe Hughes.
