Most large American cities hold Debutante "Coming Out" Balls. The Birmingham Balls began in 1947. U.S. Representative Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was the guest speaker at the 1953 Ball. To make it to the Debutante coming out is to have "made it" socially and a great deal of pressure is brought to bear on these young ladies, in much the same way as beauty queens are selected. They must demonstrate their good grades, talents, learn how to dance, set a table, and be "ladies."
