Additional Details

The Bailey family were large landowners on Edisto, dating back to the early 18th century. The Point of Pines plantation was acquired by the Bailey family in 1789 from Paul Grimball, another large landowner on the island. It was 1262 acres in size. The plat shows the plantation divided in 3 parcels for Ralph, Henry, and Benjamin Bailey, presumably sons of the deceased. The division was made on the basis of 735 arable acres. Adjoining savannah, marshes, and sand portions of the plantation are shown but did not figure into the divisions of the plantation.
