Additional Details

Following months of racially motivated violence, the 1876 South Carolina gubernatorial election ended in controversy. The incumbent Republican, Daniel Chamberlain, was recognized by the Federal government and temporarily kept in power by Federal troops under General Ruger, but Democrat challenger Wade Hampton set up a shadow government which was eventually recognized as legitimate, bringing Reconstruction to an end. Here President Grant orders Ruger: "Do not recognize in any manner any person as Governor of South Carolina other than DH Chamberlain until you hear further from me." He also asks whether "there are armed bodies of men in Columbia . . . threatening the peace."
