This 31 August 1886 earthquake, centered near Charleston, was one of the strongest ever recorded on the East Coast, and was felt as far away as Cuba, Boston, and Chicago.

These views are uncaptioned, are numbered in the negative, and also bear later pencil numbers which key them to the published lists of "Cook's Earthquake Views of Charleston & Vicinity" taken by George LaGrange Cook.
