Major General Lincoln, in charge of the American army's Southern Department, was at this point rushing from Augusta, GA to assist in the defense of Charlestown, SC. Here he offers reinforcements to a local militia leader who was apparently being harassed by Loyalists: "Captain Smith with more than thirty horse are ordered into your neighborhood to protect the friendly & to restrain the inimical . . . you will encourage the inhabitants to take arms in defense of themselves & property."
