A LANDMARK OF ENGLISH CHROMOLITHOGRAPHY (SPAIN--ARCHITECTURE. ) Jones, Owen; and Gourdy, Jules. Plans, Elevations, Sections and Details of the Alhambra. 102 plates and plans (65 of which are chromolithographs), two chromolithographed titles, numerous wood engraved illustrations in text. 2 volumes. Folio, 585x425 mm, contemporary 1/2 red morocco over marbled boards, scuffed at extremities; internally an exceptional example, very clean and bright; ex-library, small ink date stamp on list of plates in volume two. Abbey, Travel, 156. London, 1842-45
Volume One was issued in parts starting in 1836. Thus the first chromolithographs from Jones' work rank as perhaps the earliest of their kind to be printed in England. Jones' Alhambra was published at the same time as Robert's Holy Land and reflects the strong interest in Islam and the Near East in the 1840s.
