Herbert E. Wale (1876-1962) was a Wyoming native who served as a private in the 36th United States Infantry; the 1900 census shows him with his unit in Balincaguin in July 1900. Many of the captioned photographs specify his unit, and locations in the Philippines such as the Balincaguin River and Bangued. They show a mix of American soldiers and Filipinos--some show Filipino porters on the march through mountainous terrain, carrying supplies on poles. Others show wagon trains crossing rivers, military bases, town scenes, and more. One of the unmounted photographs is a duplicate of a mounted one, suggesting that they are all by the same photographer. After the war Wale established himself as a professional photographer, first in Summerland, CA, and then for several decades in Washington State.
