(SPIRIT PHOTOGRAPHY)
A set of 6 spirit photographs, five of them crediting the medium photographer W.H. Kanouse based in Seattle.
This set of photographs refers to Spiritualism, a movement predicated upon belief that the soul survived after death and could continue to communicate with the living. It combines one promotional image of a medium and 5 commissioned images that feature subjects of the same family. All subjects are accompanied by more or less distinct or shadowy ghostly apparitions. The spirit photography consists in taking portraits of the living and "capturing" the spirits of their lost loved ones. Silver prints, the images measuring approximately 4 5/8x3 3/4 inches (4), 5 5/8x4 inches (one), and 7x5 (one) inches (11.7x9.5, 14.3x10.2, and 17.8x12.7 cm.), two with sheets slightly larger, the mounts 6 1/2x5 3/8 inches (4) and 7 3/4x5 3/4 inches (one) (16.5x13.7 and 19.7x14.6 cm.), one with the caption "Mrs Rath, medium from Medford" in pencil on verso, two with a photographer's credit label on mount verso, four with a letter adhered to mount verso (two crediting W.H. Kanouse) with explanations by the author of the family members and spirits depicted. Circa 1902, 1916, and 1919-20
