The advertising agencies around the country were among the broader civil rights vanguard. In New York, B. B. D. & O, one of the nation's largest advertising agencies, was the first to establish a separate division devoted to the black radio and later television audience. This smaller agency in Chicago, was tapping into this market with a proposed series of ad campaigns featuring the great track star as well as his family.
