Additional Details

two exceptionally fine pencil drawings bearing alken's signature displaying his remarkable knowledge of equine anatomy. Drawn for Alken's "Ideas, Accidental and Incidental to Hunting and other sports; caught in Leicestershire &c." London: T. McLean [ca. 1826-30] (Tooley 36). Both drawings captioned in pencil in Alken's hand. The upper drawing reads "Ideas. Henry Alken," and "This is just to give you an idea of a Steeple Chase" appearing above and below the image, respectively. This drawing was reproduced as the thirty-first plate in the published work, with the legend appearing as in the original. The second subject is simply titled "Ideas" with "I begin to have an Idea that this Tandem driving is not altogether free from danger" below, and was reproduced as the thirty-sixth plate with the original legend in the same publication as above. Fine original examples of Alken's superb technique.
