Additional Details

This game featured the defending 1883 National League champion Boston Red Stockings against the coming 1885 champions, the Chicago White Stockings. Rookie sensation John Clarkson (a native of nearby Cambridge) pitched Chicago to a 6-5 victory over Boston, sealed in the bottom of the tenth inning when Cap Anson drove in King Kelly with the winning run.
The loss essentially knocked Boston out of the National League pennant race. Going into mid-August, Boston had trailed the mighty Providence Grays by 4 1/2 games. Boston then won 8 straight games which Providence matched win for win. On 30 August, two Providence wins against the Boston loss extended the gap to 6 games, a lead Providence only expanded on in the closing month of play.
The printed portion of the card includes advertisements for 7 Boston-area businesses, the league standings, and dates for 3 upcoming games in Boston.
