The Association for Colored Community Work was launched in Akron in 1925 as a Black-run alternative to the YMCA. They launched a basketball team in 1935. The organization's name was changed to the Akron Community Service Center in 1945.

This image, by the city's well-known Black-owned Stewart's Photo Studio, shows two coaches and twelve players. It is a few decades too early to include Akron's most famous son, Lebron James.
