One of these postcards shows a triumphant Jack Johnson standing over the prostrate form of James J. Jeffries, the "Great White Hope." Jeffries, who was roundly defeated by Johnson, had been brought out of retirement to defeat the African American in a match rife with racial overtones. The second postcard, taken in England a year before the fight, shows a dapper Jack Johnson.
