This photograph was taken on 1 March 1964, during a momentous period in both men's lives. Five days earlier, Cassius Clay had defeated Sonny Liston for the heavyweight championship, on 25 February 1964. Five days after this photograph, on 6 March, Elijah Muhammad announced that the boxer was formally joining the Nation of Islam and had taken the name Muhammad Ali. Two days after that, on 8 March. Malcolm X announced his break from the Nation of Islam, leading to a break in his relationship with Ali. He was killed less than a year later.
