Additional Details

Tom Molineaux (1784-1818) was a slave who literally fought his way to freedom. In 1809, after defeating a slave from a rival plantation, his owner not only gave him his freedom, but $500. Molineaux made his way to New York where he fought several matches, and then on to England where he was matched against their champion, Tom Cribb. In this, their second match, Crib struck Molineaux on the throat in the 11th round, thus defeating him for the second time. Despite these losses, Molineaux fought numerous exhibition fights, and retired to Dublin where he died.
