first american edition, with a new preface, of an important British cricket guide (see previous lot). Also of interest are 5 pages of publisher's ads relating to their Base Ball Player's Pocket Companion, which included rules of both the New York and the doomed Massachusetts variants. Four full-page engravings from this baseball manual are included here, titled "The Thrower," "The Striker," "The Catcher," and "Base Tender" (standing by the stake used in Massachusetts rather than a flat base). Early owner Franklin Satterthwaite (1845-1888) was a well-known sports journalist and great-great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin.
