Additional Details

This is a scarce, early American sporting print of the greatest American racing horse of the first third of the 19th century and the sire of numerous future champions. Bred on Long Island, American Eclipse withstood numerous challenges, including several heated North-South races. Charles Henry Hall commissioned Massachusetts artist Alvin Fisher to paint portraits of American Eclipse and two other horses, which are considered the first significant horse portraits in America. This engraving by Wright is not listed in Fielding's checklist of American engravers.<
