Additional Details

The annual game between the Army and Navy academies is one of the institutions of college football. This oversized scrapbook was compiled by a Navy fan to commemorate their 1962 victory over the Army by a 34-14 score. The game was held, as usual, on neutral territory in Philadelphia.

One of the panels features the Navy's star quarterback Roger Staubach in action, captioned "He Who Will Not Risk Cannot Win." Also featured are the famed Navy mascot Bill the Goat looking for a fight with the Army mule, Navy running back John Sai, and Navy coach Wayne Hardin gloating over Army coach Paul Dietzel.

This particular game stood out in the long Army-Navy rivalry, as it was attended by President Kennedy--a World War Two naval hero. See Blake Stilwell, "Why the 1962 Army-Navy Game Was the Most-Anticipated Academy Football Game Ever," on the military.com blog, 7 December 2022.

Laid in are 6 silk-screen placards, 14 x 11 inches or smaller, produced for rooters at Navy football games in the same era, each brightly colored and boldly illustrated: "Go 150s, Beat Army"; "Beat Maryland"; "Beat Army"; "Tar Pitt"; "Sting the Yellow Jackets"; and "Dump Dame."
