William H. Doble (circa 1814-1896) of Philadelphia was one of the pioneers of American harness racing from about 1830 onward, as a driver, breeder, and owner. The letters here describe the confidential offer of a promising horse in Trenton, NJ; 3 letters about the delivery and racing prospect of the trotting horse General Howard from Milwaukee; the prospects of the horse Rip Rap from Richmondale, OH; and other letters which illuminate the harness racing scene of this era.
