Additional Details

With the cool ocean breezes and location, Sheepshead Bay was an ideal destination for tourists. Hotels began arriving in the early 1800s, and tourists also enjoyed the area's fine seafood restaurants and casinos. Beginning around 1880 the Coney Island Jockey Club opened a racetrack with a reviewing stand, easily the equal of Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Here the Sheepshead Bay Futurity was run. As seen in this engraving, most of the jockeys were black, as was common in the 19th century. The track was closed in 1915, following a decline in attendance.
