Althea Gibson (1927-2003) was the great tennis star of her era, having been named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the year in 1957 and 1958. In 1958, she finally gave up her amateur status and attempted to make a living as a professional despite extremely limited opportunities for female athletes at that time.
