Additional Details

This group of three medals and commemorative pewter mug belonged to Jesse Owens (1913-1980). Owens participated in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, where he achieved international fame by winning four gold medals: one each in the 100 meters, the 200 meters, the long jump, and as part of the 4x100 meter relay team. The mug has Owens''s name engraved on the side with the symbolic foot of Mercury. The 1933 medal was awarded to Owens for the 220 yard dash while at Ohio state. The pewter mug and medal were given to Owens in 1964 when the New York Athletic Club honored him during the 1964 Games. The small Olympic medal, though of later manufacture, belonged to Owens and was given along with the rest to the consignor''s mother in the 1970s.
The mug and medals are accompanied by a letter of provenance and one original photograph and four copies of original photographs of the consignor''s mother and Owens when they were at Ohio State together in the early 1930s.
