Additional Details

Kamishibai performers used these illustrations displayed within a miniature stage to narrate shows on the street corners of Japan. The stories were designed to impart a sense of nationalism and morality to children.

The present set of plates is a story of the Japanese army fighting Chiang Kai-Shek during the Second Sino-Japanese war. The artwork is either taken directly from, or playfully in the style of children's drawings.
