A portrait of Susan B. Anthony. Charcoal and crayon drawing over a silver print, the image measuring overall 19 1/2x15 1/2 inches (49.5x39.4 cm.), with K. Quinlan's signature, the subject's name, and date in ink on recto; in a period wood frame with a label from Dow's Studio, a photographic studio in Ogdensburg, NY, on verso. 1889

Though dated 1889, the portrait of Anthony bears resemblance to her appearance in about 1855, a year that she travelled extensively, including to Ogdensburg in St. Lawrence County, New York. The year this work is dated, 1889, marked a major milestone in Anthony's career, her negotiating the merger of the National American Woman Association and the American Woman Suffrage Association. The portrait may have been made earlier at the Dow Studio, and printed in anticipation of this commemoration or indeed of Anthony's 80th birthday in February of 1900. We were not able to find a record of a photographer K. Quinlan.
