Additional Details

The first, dated 6 March 1804, recommends to the House that Chase be impeached from the Supreme Court; the second, dated 26 March 1804, contains the specific reasons for the action. Impeached by the House, but aquitted by the Senate, the situation was purely political, with the Jeffersonians attempting to oust Chase for his Federalist beliefs. Coming only a year after John Marshall's decision in Marbury v Madison, the failed impeachment further strengthened the autonomy of the Supreme Court.<
