Additional Details

scarce first limited edition. signed by toyen and inscribed and signed by heisler to poet and champion of surrealism, david gascoyne in 1945. Hand-written colophon by Heisler, in German, on verso of final leaf stating that the complete edition consisted of only 45 copies. It has been recorded that 40 were printed in German and 20 in Czech so either Heindrich mis-wrote the number or 45 was the correct number of German printings or the total edition. This important work was printed clandestinely in the first year of the Nazi occupation. As all activity deemed modern or liberal was declared illegal and suppressed, all copies had to be circulated privately. Bydžovská & Karel Srp, 352; Chadwick. Women Artists of the Surrealist Movement, NY 1985; Štyrský -Toyen-Heisler. Musée National d'Art Moderne/Centre Georges Pompidou, 1982.
