The twin-screw vessel was built in England and commenced her maiden voyage on 21 November 1925. She became famous as a repatriation ship during World War II and returned to passenger service in March 1946. She was sold to the North German Lloyd firm in 1954 and began service for that line as the "Berlin" in 1955.
