The twin-screw "Kungsholm" embarked on her maiden voyage on 24 November 1928. She was sold to the United States government in 1942 and renamed "John Ericsson." She was severely damaged by fire and resold to the Swedish American Line. In 1948 she was sold to Home Lines and renamed "Italia." Passenger service was ended in 1977, but the ship continued as a freighter until recently under foreign ownership.
