On April 7, 1927 the president of the American Telephone and Telegraph company, Walter S. Gifford, gave the first public demonstration of television. A group of reporters and dignitaries were invited to the AT&T Bell Telephone Laboratories to witness Gifford talking live to a broadcast image of Secretary of Energy Herbert Hoover.
