Additional Details

Delavan was one of the nation's leading temperance advocates, and a founder of the New York State Temperance Society. He reports to an unidentified correspondent on the Society's efforts: "State agent Mr. Turner now on Long Island has induced the owners of 19 whale ships sailing from one part in that island to adopt the Temperance principle." One group of temperate sailors reportedly "on learning that the usual quantity of spirits were put on board, wailed in a body on the captain, and respectfully requested him to land it, as they did not want to be tempted by it!"
