Signed and inscribed with a poem by well-known crossdresser Tex Hendrix to an unidentified recipient ("Frank."). Hendrix was a performer at San Francisco's legendary nightclub Finocchio's. Opened as a speakeasy in 1929 the club flourished after the repeal of Prohibition and grew to include female impersonators and various other musical and variety acts. With racially and sexually diverse performers and patrons, Finocchio's (Italian for fennel but also slang for "gay") became a haven for minorities and the LGBTQ community of locals and tourists alike. Before it closed its doors in 1999, it welcomed such A-listers as Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis, Mae West, Barbra Streisand, Montgomery Clift, Bette Midler, and Cher, among many others.
